What are pre-medications, and why do we use them prior to some veterinary visits?

Pre-medications are medicines we use, often the night before and the morning of, some of our veterinary visits.  They are often used to keep a pet comfortable and calm to promote a fear free visit!

Gone are the days of wrangling your dog or cat to trim their nails or take an x-ray!  This is not good for pets or good for people.  It makes all of our anxiety high and can even influence some diagnostic tests like urine and blood samples and blood pressure.  It takes longer and makes the next visit even more stressful and less safe.

Lucky for us, we have a lot of nice and safe options you can give at home in order to help calm your pet if they are prone to stress at the vet clinic!  These can range from herbal options to pharmaceuticals.  Sometimes it can take some time to find the right medicinal fit, the right dose and the right approach.  But our patience pays off when we can turn your pet from running for the hills to running to our treatment area!

Below is some information on fear free.

We acknowledge that the town of Arlington is located on the ancestral lands
of the Massachusett Tribe, the tribe of Indigenous peoples from whom the
Colony, Province, and Commonwealth have taken their names. We pay our
respects to the ancestral bloodline of the Massachusett Tribe and their
descendants who still inhabit historic Massachusett territories today.
